In the realm of human experience, death seems to be the one thing that has the power to make us feel powerless. Whether it is the end of a physical life or the end of a situation which has meant a great deal to us, death, the end, seems so final. It may see that way, but it doesn't have to be that way. In reality, death is simply another way the nature of life calls upon us to shift, change perspective, reach, and grow to new heights of consciousness.
It may take a little time to process the body and mind through the emotion of the experience. However, once that occurs, there is a power within the spirit capable of helping us make the shift. In the face of death, an end, or a seperation, we have the spiritual power to make peace, continue communication, forgive, release, share, find closure. Writing a letter to the departed one, letting them know you miss them and think about them is an excellent process. Mailing the letter is optional. Communicating your thoughts and feelings provides the healing.
You can mentally speak to the person. In this way you can say whatever is in your heart, all the things you did not have the opportunity or courage to say in person. More important, when we turn to spirit, the consciousness shifts an unwanted ending to a spiritual closure. Closure enables you to release. With closure we can find the strength to accept; and understand the strength to recover from the experience and move on. (from Faith in the Valley: Lessons for Women on the Journey to Peace by Iyanla Vanzant. p. 65.)
Today, someone showed my a book, a journal of love, loss and memories called Hope Heals. This journal is a tool and a guide for a grieving person to honor the relationship between you and your loved one by grieving in a meaningful way. If that's where you are today, I invite you to take a look.

A prayer for those who mourn
Compassionate God, give courage and faith to all who mourn, that they may have strength to meet the days ahead with steadfastness and patience; not as those who are without hope, but in thankful remembrance of your great goodness, and in the joyful expectation of eternal life in your presence with those they love; through Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord, Amen.
